On the Forum...

Ever wanted to be a ninja? Ever wanted to get messed up in a complex tale of Narutardom? ...that hasn't been written by Shenrai?

To entice people to the forums, we're dong a bit of roleplay. Fanfiction authors are sudden;y finding themselves in the bodies of the Ninjas of Konoha. This is either very bad, or very good. So c'mon down and invite yourself in. You can play as yourself-in-a-ninja or as one of the canon ninjas wondering what's going on.

It's like a Round Robin, only you don't get to control anyone but yourself.

Shino Skin

The Final Runner-up skin, playin_lover's Shino banner is up. I wound up having to cut it down a little so it would fit (six pixels), but I tried to keep it as true to the original as I could.

I'm rather fond of this skin, and congratulations to everyone who won, and thank you to everyone who entered!

In regards to the chatroom debate from a couple weeks ago. The poll indicates that a lot of you would like a simpler method of discussion, but the responses indicate that a chatroom would be a bad idea.

With that in mind, who would like to see the revival of TONFA's forum? Or even the creation of a yahoo!group specifically for TONFA? A forum would give us far more control, but a mailing list would send all responses to your inbox, and keep you constantly up-to-date without having to worry about constantly checking the forums.

Thoughts?

edit - I fail at waiting for proper answers. Have a forum. Skin for the forum coming... eventually. Once I get the ones for TONFA squared away, at least.

edit #2 - Holy Jebus on a stick. 711 posts in 24 hours. Amazing.

New Skins

Four of the Five runner-up banners have been skinned and put up. Yes, they've been finished before the winners were. Mostly because they were a case of pasting the banner into a skin already created, and messing around with colors.

The new skins are titled "Hyuuga", "Shikamaru2", "Kakashi2" and "Hinata".

"Hyuuga" is Hinotama's 'Byakugan!' banner set in the Naruto skin.

"Shikamaru2" is antilogicgirl's 'Shikamaru 2.0: Creeping Shadows' banner set into the, you guessed it, Shikamaru skin. Yeah, that one was kinda obvious.

"Kakashi2" is DancerOfShadows' 'Kakashi Banner' in the SasuNaru skin.

"Hinata" is d2killerz' 'Hyuuga Hinata' banner set in the DesertBrown skin (it fit better in than one then any of the skins originally in the contest).

There's one last runner up-- playin_lover's Shino banner-- which will be finished either tomorrow or Wednesday.

edit Okay, I lied. I'll be working on the Shino skin tomorrow (Thursday, October 13), since there's a bit more effort involved in setting it up than I thought...

Registration Problems

The script that handles registration has been acting up recently, and I am working on fixing the problem. In the meantime, however...

It's most likely that you have been added to the member database. There are two ways to check this: return to this index page and check the name of the newest member. If it's your username then hooray! You've been registered.

The other method is the one that most people have been emailing me about. You can try to register again. You'll get a message that your email address has already been used to create an account.

There's no reason to be alarmed-- if your email has already been used, you've been registered. Just log in with the username and password you created, and you're ready to go!

Hopefully I'll have these problems sorted out soon.

Banner Contest Winners

I shouldn't make multiple news posts in one day, but this does deserve to have it's own post.

First Place, as we all know, is Mimi Hatake's Gaara banner.

Second Place goes to Antagonist's SasuNaru banner "Regret" (http://www.narutofic.org/viewstory.php?sid=1487)

And Third Place goes to broken0dream's banner "Welcome to Naruto's Life" (http://www.narutofic.org/viewstory.php?sid=1413&textsize=0&chapter=5)

Congradulations, and now that my laptop's back, I'm definitely going to get back to working on those skins!

REJOICE, REJOICE!

My laptop is back~

I have to reinstall everything, but I'm happy to say that my laptop has been returned to me! God, I missed that thing so much. I never realised how much I came to depend on it...

And the other reason to rejoice ((why there's two up there)) actually sounds pretty egocentric, but hey. I'm allowed to be egocentric every now and again. For those who have been wondering since Random Costume Day, and my silly little question...

I will be turning 21 on the 22nd of October. Nineteen days from now, I will be legal in the US of A. Which only matters because I'll be travelling to the US next year for Otakon, and a friend of mine said "you better not be drunk the entire time you're there!" ((...she has such little faith in me, no?))

But yes. I'm being egocentric. I'm also telling everyone I'm going to Otakon now so you can all kick my arse if I back out of it again this year. You all know my plans. Do not let me fail!

NFA

Okay, time to get my little fit off the top of the page...

I've finally finished working on the new NFA page. Yes, that's what I've been doing, instead of updating the NFA pages. I apologise, and I'm sending out the emails informing the nominees of their status. Don't be surprised if you get one!

Anyways, the NFA has moved. Not very far, but still, it's moved. It can now be found at http://nfa.narutofic.org/. It now includes a nice, shiny form for those of you who would prefer to fill out a form than hit 'reply' on the confirmation emails :)

Also, the NFA, once again, has it's own unique layout. It's a pretty layout, and not one made by me. I have a layout in the works, but for now, I think we can all settle for Kakashi, right?

Remember, Nominations are only being accepted until November 1st! So get those stories in now. And don't forget to Second a story you like-- otherwise, they won't get into the awards.

Let's try this again...

OKAY. SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE, STOP SAYING "DO WHAT YOU WANT!"

It doesn't matter what I want to do. Seriously. I want to know if you would use the damn chat. I'm not going to go to all the work of installing it, if the only person who ever uses it is me.

So this post? Consider it a poll. Any responses to it are either "yes" or "no".

None of this goddamned "well... do what you want!" bullshit. Because, as previously stated MY OPINION DOES NOT MATTER. And if anyone ELSE decides to say that line, there will be no chat rooms. Ever. And I'm seriously considering banning anyone who uses the Round Robin feature as a chatroom, because hey! You didn't want one in the first place.

Yes, it's mean. But I am getting frustrated by the complete lack of answers to a yes or no question. Either you want a chatroom or not. What I want doesn't matter.

edit: If you don't want your name known by responding to this post... I've closed the first anime poll, and opened a brand new Would you use a chatroom? poll. Yay.

Query

It's been suggested to me to open a chatroom for TONFA. I'm not much of a fan of webbased chatrooms, and given the dismal showing of both the livejournal community and the (now defunct) forums, I figure I should post a message here asking for opinions.

The basic options are to revive the forums, open a chatroom, or open an IRC channel (which, I'll admit, is the one I like best).

We could also try to figure out how to get a respond & nested comments feature for the news pages. The problem with this idea is that I don't know how to do that, and would require finding someone that does.

Ideas? Comments? General randomness?

edit: So, apparently we've come to the conclusion that while being able to chat would be awesome, chatrooms can lead to bad things. (That's why rules were invented.)

There's also, apparently, been the decision to "do whatever you want, admin-type!" Which isn't all that helpful. What I'm mostly asking is: if we were to install one of the above options, would any of you actually use them?

Youthful Curiosity

Ignoring my doubtful sanity ((why is it that I always end up posing like Gai?)) I've got a question for ya'll. It comes in the form of a new poll.

This is just to satisfy my own curiosity, while I await the return of my laptop ((we had to send it back to the manufacturer)). What was your first anime?

I'm going to be horrified by the answers, I just know it.

Something that might be helpful.

Forgive me if this is somewhat... racy for a news item, but one of my friends in LJ recently posted a link to a "smut rant," which I found to be not only amusing, but quite insightful. I thought current and prospective X-rated fan fiction writers, and anyone else who's interested might want to take a look: Smut Rant.

For the record, you're reading it at your own risk, and it's the author's opinions (but the girl's a damn good writer, if I do say so myself). Take it with a grain of salt, if you will.

The rant applies more to yaoi, but there are still lots of good hints you can pick up for non-yaoi NC-17 fics as well. (But don't ask me about the man/woman things that weren't mentioned in the post. I'm the wrong person to ask for pointers on that sort of thing--and I'm sure if you Google writing tips for that, a few things will pop up.)

I'm a pervert and I secretly love dirty fan fiction and PWPs, but they have to be well-written. I've read lots of good het/yaoi/yuri fics--as well as bad ones that have made me want to become asexual. (Meat, sausages, pickles, trouser snakes, and the like are highly unappealing in the bedroom.)

Edit: In case people take this the wrong way, NO, by no means am I saying TONFA should be another version of the Adult Fanfiction website. The bottom line is, if you're going to write smut, write it well, and the point of the link was to provide tips.

Some Minor Difficulties...

In Regards to the NFA: Please DO NOT nominate anyone at this time. My laptop has eaten itself, and I am unable to access my email. I'll be changing the email in the form as soon as I can, but until then, sit tight. It shouldn't be too long. Laptop is still screwy, but I've gotten everything straightened out on the email front. You may continue your nominating and whatnot.

In Regards to the Banner Contest Skins: I know which banners won, however all the work I've put into the skins so far has been, once again, eaten by my laptop.

Right now, it looks like my laptop is very, very, very dead. I've gotten it to boot up so far as my wallpaper, and then it freezes. So there's a possibility that I'll be able to retrieve everything and that we're not totally hooped with it. If we can't get it running tonight, we're taking it in to Staples to see about getting them to fix it. I hope to god my files get recovered. Not only do I have NFA and TONFA related stuff on it, but I also have sixty episodes on it ;_

New Skin...?

So, despite the fact that the skin box says that there is a new skin (("Gaara")), there is, in fact, no skin.

I'm working on putting together one of the skins for the winners of the Banner Contest, but in my stupidity I deleted my eFiction test site. So you get to see me building it step by step here! Mostly because I don't want to reinstall the test site right now ^_;;

Edit: Okay, well I've got to get running off to a tattoo convention, so I'm putting development on hold. Though the index page of the skin is all finished if you want to get a look at it.

The Gaara skin's banner was made by Mimi Hatake, and took first place in the Banner Contest. Congratulations!

Are you...?

Are you Canadian? Did you recently vacation at a campground in Alberta? Did a crazy native guy in a loincloth show up in your campground? Did he teach you how to make a vest out of a paper bag?

Did you get filmed on Global TV wearing your vest?

First, my dad thinks you're four.

Second... I must commend you. You are a true Narutard. Not even the fact that I have a real Naruto tattoo beats the fact that you painted the villiage symbols all over your paper bag and showed them off on TV. You are most awesome, girl.

HTML help and a Warning

Due to some comments I've seen around the site, I've made a downloadable text file to help explain how to use the HTML in your stories.
The HTML Help Guide

Also, PLEASE do not make extremely large titles that stretch the pages. Those titles that are found to be too long may have to be shortened. This also applies to Summaries. Summaries should not take up half a page. In fact, it shouldn't be more than two lines longer than the summary box.
And as always: disclaimers save your butts. Not just ours. And don't forget to vote. NFA and The Banner Contest.

Ja!

After two hours of work...

It's been a busy day for me, so far. Not only did I have to get up to answer the door for my brother's lastest package ((at least this one I didn't have to pay for...)) but I've spent the last two hours getting the NFA up and running properly.

You would not believe how many problems that stupid form was giving me, and all because one file didn't get copied over when I switched servers. I can be such an idiot some times. But anyways! The NFA pages are up, but at the moment the only skins that works for it are the Haku, Kabuto, Kakashi and Naruto skins. I'm sorry if those arent your skins of choice; I am working on getting the other skins up, it's just slow going.

Speaking of skins-- the Banner Contest is ready to be voted on. There are ninety-two entries. Wow! The poll options have the url of the images in them, but the images are in the exact same order that they were submitted. That means if you want to go through the entries by looking at the banner contest category, and you decide you like one of the banners by antilogicgirl, you take the chapter number and count down the list to that entry. Easy :)

Voting for the banners will end on the 31st.

edit: Okay, because I am stupid, and I forgot not all the skins have the welcome message, or the poll link...

The NFA
Poll Voting Page. Sorry!

That time of year again...

No, not the NFA. Not until next week. No, this is something far more... interactive.

Once upon a time there was a girl, and this girl decided that on August 12th, she and her friends were to wear costumes. It was, after all, her nineteenth birthday, and they had to comply with her wishes, right?

Her friends, of course, agreed. And then tried to force people all over the world to comply with their wishes. This... didn't really turn out so well, but hey! They tried. So, that August 12th, the girl dressed up as Shikamaru ((Not Chuunin-Shika, Genin-Shika. Which means she had to find something to cover her boobs. Like a monkey-patterned neon yellow bikini. I bow to her awesomeness)) and your friendly neighbourhood admin dressed up as Temari.

There was much fun and goofball shippiness.

But that was last year. And this year, people seem to have forgotten about Random Costume Day. But not I! Not the admin who's closet is more full of costumes than clothing!

So what does this have to do with TONFA? Mostly... nothing. That is unless you want to participate in Random Costume Day. Which is why I'm bringing this up. When I was going through my closet, I discovered that the only costume I wanted to wear wasn't finished ((I'd forgotten to get the ties for the shirt. Uhm. Oops.)), so...

Ninja time! It's Random Costume Day; who needs to be dressed as any particular character? And to be a Naruto ninja is as easy as throwing on something skin-tight ((and, if you're working, or your parents are, uh, not pleased, maybe some pants, too)), followed by a hitae-ate and sandals. Easy! So easy that anyone can do it!

And for those of you without hitae-ate/head protectors; be an undercover ANBU. All you need is a sharpie marker to tattoo your arm :)

((If you couldn't tell: I love costumes, costuming, and anything that has to do in dressing as someone I'm not. Any excuse is a good excuse))

edit: If you want to post pictures of your costumes, feel free :) Mine are here: FAITO!, Full Body Shot and With Ichigo the Nin-Dog. He wouldn't leave me alone while my brother was taking the pictures. ^_;;

((Random Question: Based on these pictures... how old is the Priest?))

Age of Consent; Vacation

ladygizarme had a question regarding rule ten in the Submission rules, aka "How to Avoid Shouta".

To clarify, being "of age" means that according to the law of the SETTING in which the story takes place, the person in question must be legally able to consent to any sexual practice. For example, if the story was set in Japan, and it was a Kakashi/Naruto pairing, Naruto would have to be at least thirteen. In Canada, the age is usually fourteen, with some restrictions.

My best advice is to look up the area in which you wish to set the scene. (Seriously, you can Google it). I'd hate to have to remove a great story because of one little ol' scene.

Also, tomorrow I leave for Ocean City! I will not have internet access, but you may still feel free to send any questions to paglae@gmail.com and I'll answer them when I return on the 12th.

Happy writing!

Author-fics

People.

AUTHOR-FICS ARE NOT NARUTO FANFICTION.

That means stories that are more about the author than about Naruto should go in the Non-Naruto Fiction section. Cameos by Naruto-characters do not make Naruto fanfiction.

Full imersion self-insertions-- meaning that the author-character is forced into living a life in the Naruto-verse according to the rules of Naruto can still be sorted into the various categories. If you want an example of this style of author-fic, think of carrotglace's 'Insertion', Animeaddiction's 'Insert-Self', or Eternally Lost's 'Insert Self Here'-- all of which are Ranma fics, actually. Well. Insertion is a massive crossover.

Another thing. If an author puts a work up for a Round Robin, please respect that author. That means you DO NOT TOUCH the summary for the story. You abide by the words of the summary.

Details and Clarification

Another question-and-answer session.

Just to clarify: you can enter as many banners as you want. Banners that include fanart drawn by someone other than yourself will only be added to the polls if they have proper documentation of who drew them, so that I can get permission to use the art should such a banner win.

The top three banners will get a new skin design based on them. Yes, an entirely new skin.

The runner-up banners ((five of them)) will each get "slotted" into the spot the banner was sized for. The skin colors will, of course, change to fit the image, but the skin design used will be those that the template came from.

And this was originally going to be an edit tacked on to the end of my last post, but it seemed a bit long for a simple edit. So a new post.

Any specific questions about the contest should be asked here.

Edit: Due to some 'housekeeping' you may find stories on the "Most Recent" list that have not actually been updated.

There as also been a change to the submission rules. I will state it here as well: the Series Function (("Add New Series" on your User Page)) is to be used as an index for stories that have already been written. An index is used to indicate stories that follow a sequence; there is no point in having one if there are no stories in it, or if there is only one story in it. Please refrain from creating one for a single story, unless you intend to leave the series open to the rest of the authors on the site to add to.

I love you all

Getting home, and seeing all these lovely banners...! Oh, you all just made my day! I love you all and thankyou for your entries into the contest. I'm leaving it open for entries until August 16th. At which point we'll start taking nominations for the 3rd Annual Naruto Fanfiction Awards.

There'll be more on the NFA posted later.

One thing I have to ask, of those entering the banner contest... please, please, PLEASE, if you're going to use fanart by someone other than yourself, include WHO drew the picture. If you can, include a link to an archive of the artist's work.

Even if one of the fanart banners won, I won't be able to use it without the artist's permission. Knowing who drew it is only half the battle-- I'll have to ask permission to use the pictures should any of them get chosen as the winner.

Art Theft is wrong, after all.

edit: I so need to find a "reply to" function for the comments...

Anyways, Hinotama brought up a good point; unless you're taking pictures-- in this case, pictures as in landscape photographs ((sunsets, lakes, forests, etc))-- that have a watermark on them, you don't have to include who made the picture. However, if there's a watermark on them, you must include the photographer's name and what-have-you.

Otakon 2007

It's almost a week away from Otakon! Will any of you be attending and/or cosplaying? I'll be there the whole weekend, cosplaying as Toshiya from Dir en grey (if you like j-rock; I'll be wearing his Raison d'etre and FILTH costumes). If you don't know who Toshiya is, that's perfectly okay! I don't think anyone else will be cosplaying the same thing as me, so if you see a girl in thigh highs and a black PVC and leather costume chockful of ruffles on Friday, or a person wearing a gold lace sleeveless shirt, black snakeskin and leather pants, and a big fluffy vest on Saturday, that'll be me! =D Please feel free to stop by and say hi. I'll be taking lots of pictures, and if I get a chance, I'll be sure to stop by one of the many Naruto photoshoots during the convention and take pictures for all of you to see!

See you there! ^_-

Surprise!

So there I was, content to live another day shuffling off to work, returning home, messing around with TONFA, BDE, and TTV, possibly write another chapter of FYD, or even start my challenge responses ((I have two planned out, I just haven't started writing them)), when my routine.... CHANGED.

Me: "...why is the motorhome out?"
Dad: "We're going camping! ^____________________^"
Me: "..."

Surprise! I'm going to be out in the middle of bear country until friday. That means no computer access; my laptop only has a three hour battery, and there's nowhere to charge it out there.

I guess I'll see you all when I get back. Basic problems can be handled by the moderators. Anything major ((fics not showing up, skins not working properly)) will be handled when I return.

See you then!

edit: Oh! Before I go! I want to see lots of pretty banners for the contest when I return! I'm really hoping to see some with Itachi or Zabuza or Orochimaru in them. :D

Guidelines for Submission

*waves* Hi, this is Lae and as said by Priest from the previous post, I'm one of the new mods. My job around the site is to make sure that all stories follow the Submission rules. To read the rules, you can click the link at the bottom of each page labeled "Submission Rules".

A major to check is that all of your stories have a disclaimer. In a about a week I will begin checking stories to make sure that they have disclaimed their work. IF you do not have a disclaimer, you need one up by next Thursday. Though it cannot prevent the owners of NARUTO from asking that your work be removed, it can prevent some hassel.

Also,I will be checking each story as it's submitted for spelling and grammar. Thus if it's not up yet, either I have emailed you asking to fix it, or am fixing a few mistakes myself.. I may also be revising some of the rules, but I'd need to talk to Priest about that. :D

In short, I'm happy to be helpign out at the site, and can be emailed at paglae@gmail.com for any questions! Good luck with the contest.
