Chapter notes: So this will be my first fan fiction, but I'd really appreciate some constructive criticism. That said, I hope it's not too bad X3
The air was thick with morning mists that chilled her clear down down to the bone; how had she gotten separated from her team, and where was she now? Hinata put a hand to her head, a siren of a headache whirring inside her skull. Every step she managed to take felt like a mile to her aching limbs, and another worry to weigh down her already exhausted mind. Her mobility as a konoichi was vital her, should she be attacked, but she barely had the energy to walk, let alone outrun an enemy.

She dropped herself down in a tiny clearing, her breathing labored and her heart berating her for trying to travel at all; perhaps she should have waited in the clearing for Kiba and Shino to find her?

No, no this is right... I don't need to be carried by them, her thoughts reassured, but her weary heart and legs were not convinced. She'd have to rest for awhile, taking a moment to observe her surroundings; tall, full pine trees in every direction. The branches were thick and concealing, the undersides hidden almost completely by the unruly under growth. The sky was still pale enough to see the moon, and stars peeked out from the softening black. She could rest through the first half of the afternoon, and be moving again by dusk.

Under a thick pine tree, and hidden by the weeds that wrapped themselves around it, Hinata was well hidden from any unfriendly passerbys; she would be safe there, for now...

Now she had a moment to examine her memories of the previous day, time to try and remember how she'd ended up so far away from her team. They're probably worried about me... As they so often were. Hinata caught herself crying a few weak tears, more from guilt than any thing else. Why am I such a burden?

She wiped tears away as they came and went, her thoughts drifting back to just a day or so earlier...

...

They were jumped, an enemy shinobi appearing in the night like a phantom; he swooped in as they made supper around the camp fire, an arm wrapping around Hinata's throat. She remembered Kiba reaching across for her, the shadows of Shino's swarm coming to life to pursue her.

The assailant pulled her away with such speed, so suddenly the light from the fire was gone within a moment. Her name shouted from Kiba's lips faded, and the familiar whir of millions of tiny wings was all but gone.

He threw her to the ground, the tiny girl shaking with some kind of shock her body was not accustomed to. She remembered her attackers hands, terribly cold but still soft against her skin...

He pulled her up and said something in her ear, words she couldn't quite hear over her splitting head ache. He was so close...

So close...

...

Hinata's heart screamed, shooting signals to every fiber of her body in a panic. In a moment she was up, hand against her chest and her lungs hard at work as she tried to force her breathing back under her control.

That wasn't the whole story, she knew, because if it were she would know why her skull felt like a drum. She rubbed her eyes of their tears, pushing the memory away for now; there were bigger things to worry about, like finding Kiba and Shino.

With an inhale of the sweet evening air, flavored by moist pine, Hinata put on a brave face and crawled out from her hiding place. The sky was black as pitch above her, the stars all hiding behind the looming overcast. The moon was almost gone behind the clouds, casting frightening shadows where its light could escape.

This was to Hinata's advantage.

With her byakugan the lack of light didn't matter. Even without it, she noticed she could still see relatively well into the black. If anyone tried to overtake her in the night, she'd be able to detect them long before they actually reached her.

Good plan in theory...
