News

[... insert nifty subject title here]

This is a supplement/response to Priest-sama's previous news item and to something else I've noticed as well. (If this is above my station to be posting this, the other mods can feel free to delete this, and I apologize for the trouble.)

The comment form for the news update is to allow you to express your opinions regarding a decision that any of the mods make. For the most part, all of you have kept your comments polite in the news comments, so, personally, I don’t see any reason that there shouldn’t be one. =]

However, in the matter of flames and such, we all understand how rude they are. All of us also understand that it’s slightly unnerving when you have some random anon reviewer who likes to spout crap about you for no known reason. Personally, I don't mind anonymous reviews as long as they're civil and not malicious. (Even though my ego does get easily bruised when people kindly tell me something I've done is sub-standard.)

Even so--! Should you get flamed, whether it’s by an anonymous reviewer or a registered reviewer, I do think that you, as responsible, courteous users, shouldn’t sink down to their level and Internet-shout back things just as offensive. Call it self-defense if you’d like, but you don’t fight fire with fire. It’ll only get worse.

If someone tells you something like, –Your work is a piece of s***. I think you should go shoot yourself in the face, jump off a bridge, and die a horrible, painful slow death because you’re such a s***** writer,” by all means, you have every right to be angry because that’s just rude.

But it’s just as bad to say something as--or even more--immature/rude, like, –Shut the f*** up, you retard. Get lost and go to hell, and, while you’re at it, go f*** a cow. After that, I hope you get raped by tentacles because you’re a dickhead.”

Number one: flamers only get spurred on by the adverse reactions to their negative comments--it's like an aphrodisiac to them. (Don’t ask me why because my head doesn’t work like theirs...) They *love* it when the reviewee vocalizes how upset they are by their rude comments.

Number two: it’s just not polite. Just because you get treated badly doesn’t mean you have any right to treat them badly in return, no matter how rude they might be.

Thirdly… it’s the Internet. The Internet is a weird virtual world, and when you put things into public view on the Net, you kind of have to expect the risk in doing that. Flamers and people like them are cowards: it’s so much easier to rip people apart when they know no one can really lay a hand on them.

And, probably more important than the rest: When it boils down to the nitty-gritty, flamers and people like them are really not going to affect your success as a person in real life--unless you take it too much to heart and let it interfere with your livelihood.

There is a limit to how far rudeness can go (thankfully, that limit doesn’t take much to break). Unfortunately, there is no limit to some peoples’ determination to upset others. While anonymous reviews can be turned off and contact forms can be made, it won’t necessarily stop other people from finding other ways to harass others. If you are continually bullied by someone and they have no intention of stopping, you know what to do. =D (If you're not so sure, see the last sentence of the news update before this one.)

(Sorry about this being so long. ^^")

(Priestly edit: It's part of TONFA's rules/Terms of Service that any and all participants in a flame war are banned. So it's just smart to not be rude in response to someone else being rude to you. Also, because I don't want this disappearing off the top so soon-- new affie.)

This makes me feel a little better. I still hate Megaman, but U"m glad the problem is being addressed.

Thank ye. ^^

Ohh.. I didn't mean the news update comment form!! I meant the one that goes to the author's e-mail!! yes, of course there should be a form for the updates! I just meant the one where you click on the link that's on someone's profile! Sorry about any confusion.

I think this post was very...enlightening. i didn't think so many ppl were having difficulties with flamers. i myself have only had 1 and like it says in the post, shouted back at them. i think ppl have the right to criticise (spelling?) but not to that extent.

It's fine, Hinotama. ^^"

No offense and forgive me for being a pessimist, but I still think that adding a contact form is no different than stopping anonymous comments: people will still find a way around it and it's only a safety measure.

Double posting--bad dolly--but, Priest, what's an affie?

@ 18/12/06 - 08:47 pm

affie = affliate website

I'm confused. I'm sorry; I'm gifted so I assume that people know what I'm talking about, so I might have not been clear... it's a horrible habit of mine. What I'm saying is that we should remove the contact form that link to an author's e-mail. This form is found on an aouthor's profile. I am not talking about this form, the one for news updates, because this one I have no problem with this one. I just think that the OTHER contact form (the one on an author's profile that liks to their e-mail address) should be removed because we have reviews, we have the forum and authors can anonynmously harrass each other. I hope that clears things up. By the way, I'm not an admin, not even a mod, so you don't have to take into consideration any of my stupid suggestions, but I'm just trying to voice my opininon and I don't want to interfere witht he way TONFA works. (Meh, I'm double-posting, too. bad Hino.)

right......uh....okayyyy

*coughs a bit* isn't it a bit WRONG to be stating the names of the annoying reviewers?? I am sorry, but to me that is the way it seems to me..although I really don't know what is wrong with megaman because me personally haven't gotten a flame like review from him, and the review that I did get from him was asking if I could read one of his stories, YES, he is a registered user on here, anyways that is what I think. You know because stating that someone is annoying or even claming to hate them is a bit of flaming..

@ 23/12/06 - 08:07 pm

I'm going to sound like a thug when I say this, but, basically... if you have beef with someone else, keep that beef confined between you and that someone else. I don't encourage advertising your dislike of User X. = Better yet, just ignore them altogether?

@ 24/12/06 - 11:59 am

*blinks a bit* god I hope I didn't open up like a can of worms or anything like that...Sometimes I just gotta keep quiet about some things...

@ 24/12/06 - 03:28 pm

No don't worry darling. I already kind of addressed that issue in the post. I just didn't state it explicitly. =x

@ 24/12/06 - 06:02 pm

The 'Contact The Author' form is not only to give reviews by unregistered viewers of the site, it's how I and the other staff-members can contact a single user about an issue, instead of using an instant messaging program. It has its uses, and getting rid of it just because you might get flamed is a little silly, sicne you could get flamed on the forums as well.

i dont think ive had any flamers like that but ive seen them on other reviews and im glad that the problem is being exposed. :)
