Naruto looked up at the school. There seemed to be something different about it today. As if something was coming. But, what was coming? The only thing he could think was different was the weather. It was nice and warm winter day, which was odd. Maybe that was it? Nah, Naruto liked this kind of weather! It was pretty, so see the cherry blossoms flying around in the late winter wind.

“Hm…” He thought out loud.

“What are you looking at?” Naruto whipped around, facing the speaker. A young man stood there. He had short reddish hair, forever troubled eyes, and a “love” kanji tattoo on his forehead. Sabaku no Gaara, the only Suna student in Konoha. Well, that made sense. Gaara was here because his “legal guardians” Temari and Kankurou were here for school. They needed to learn all they could about Konoha, so Gaara goes to school, like he should. The reason Gaara’s eyes were forever troubled was his and Naruto’s forbidden secret, for they shared something that they doubted anyone could share with them.

“I don’t know.” The blond said, sounding rather stupid.

“Well, when you figure it out, let me know.” Gaara said softly. Even out of his siblings, Gaara was only ever nice to Naruto, and someone else Naruto has only ever met once.

“Don’t worry, I will.”

“In the meantime, we should head inside. It’s starting to cool down again.”

To Naruto, it was nice weather, but he guessed that to Gaara, who lived in a desert, it was freezing. It was too early for the blond to remember that is got colder at night in the desert than it did here in Konoha.

Almost as if on cue, the bell rang, so they had to hurry to class.

Both had to hurry inside the huge school before the gates were shut.

Konoha no Kijutsu was an Academy, so whoever could afford it could stay in the dorms. Naruto was almost flat broke, since his missions hardly made enough for food lately, and Gaara was with his siblings. It seemed more like some sort of Catholic School or a Cathedral to Naruto then a school for young ninja in training. Oh well, it was the only one in Konoha, so what choice did he have?

Ah-ha! Naruto stopped in the middle of the hall, to remember what today was!

Gaara looked back behind him when he no longer saw the other next to him. “Naruto?”

“Today, Gaara, is my birthday.” He said, smiling.

Gaara, he didn’t know what to do but look at the blond like he were a complete moron. But then, his expression changed. It was sadder, and pity showed in his turquoise eyes. It took the Uzumaki a minute realized why the Sunako was making such a face.

This day… Today, the Festival of the death of Kyuubi would take place. Today was the anniversary of his father’s and mother’s deaths. The blue-eyed boy’s head turned to the ground.

“We must get to class.” Gaara said.

Naruto wordlessly flew past his friend off to class. Today, was his birthday, and he was going to be happy about it goddamn it! Even if that meant staying away from the bigger picture that came from Gaara’s eyes.
