The air is dry, hollow and empty.
A strange lonliness begins to fill me, freezing my heart so that my vision begins to blur.

The betrayal cuts into me and I squeeze my eyes shut, tangling my fingers into dirtied locks.

Your face haunts me.
Your interlocked fingers, the closeness in which you walked...
You had protected him.
You stood in my way, blocked the path to the thing you know I want most...
What was that loyalty that held you there?
Where had it come from?
Why did you return to him as he asked you, obeyed as if some kind of pet?

Anger begins to boil through me, heating my blood so that my veins burn with an uncontrolled hatred.

I thought...
My fingers curl tightly around the handle of my blade, tearing it out from its holder and slamming it hard into the frozen ground.
The floor trembles beneath it, as if fearful.
The stars that infest the blackened sky stare solemnly down at me.
Accusing.
I was too late.
My most precious person...
Has turned away from me.
A scream wrenches itself from my lips and my fists clench, tears tracing silent lines across my cheekbones.
I failed.
Once again, a mirror of so many years ago...
I could not save you.
And yet...
Did you want to be saved?
Did you /need/ to be saved?
I tremble.
How could you leave me here...
After all these years you could just turn your back and go with...

I had promised myself to return to you.
I had sworn I would come back.
