Sitting, within a small well of continually flowing sand, a small red haired boy casts his gaze over horizon. His eyes, piercing and cruel rimmed with raven lashes and insomnia’s kohl circles; drink with an unmatched thirst, all that lies before him. The sun now within its last quarter sinks; leaving great swirls of an orange gold, bathing the land in mellow pools of simpering warmth.
For the briefest moment that warmth reaches the strange boy sitting within his little mort of sand, the dying shards of sunlight triggering memories of the rarest moments in his life.
The happy ones.
With one last fleeting effort the ball of raging beauty drizzles out of sight plunging Gaara, once again, into a chilled darkness of unknown depths. All thoughts of the previous summer are banished and his aquamarine eyes, laced with an unfathomable sadness, drop to hide under sweeping lashes.
He had felt wanted, cared for and perhaps even needed by a select few. A feeling that took him a long time to understand, almost too long, before he knew it, it was time to return. And now, here he sits upon the borders of his land, watching the paths from the village of the leaf with a newer feeling. One that even after several months of concentration he did not understand until this very second.
With the setting of yet another sun, the cruel bringing of a crueller night he finally, with a painful lurch to somewhere within his chest, realises what it is.
Hope.
For a second time, Gaara comes to grasp a new emotion well enough to feel it within its rawest intensity as it dwindles with unprecedented speed. They will not come; they had said they would with the best of intentions. He even believed several of them enough to sit within this little ditch and shed a solitary tear.
