Not Quite
by Boyarina
I have lived in a world completely different from this. I have lived in a time far older than what it is
today. I have lived far, far longer than what I would have liked to live. Contrary to what you are
thinking, I am not immortal. I'm just......me. Me who have lived a thousand lives...remembering each one
in turn.
Let me tell of one life that have taught me greatly on how to live. One life that had taught me why it
is important to live...
I remembered being a warrior. I enlisted to be one. Yes, I enlisted because our ruler didn't have the
heart to force our people to take up arms and defend our territory. We are a peaceful lot after all. We
remained neutral the best that we could but since we are located in the borders, we have to choose an
ally. Our ruler chose the ally where his brother signed up in. An ally that in my opinion is on the
losing end.
I am not in for the winnings, but I sure would like to have the comfort of not being besieged and taken
in as a POW. Mainly, that is the reason why I have enlisted: to protect my hide and to defend my people.
I don't want to end up like a sitting duck waiting for someone to take his shot at me. I had to be
always on guard.
I am helping build the barracks now, with every other man that had enlisted with the army. Despite out
pansy-footed ruler, our arsenal is full, our men full of vigour. If it's gonna come down to one on one
combat, our army would never be found lacking. We just have to secure our post and make sure that the
civilians would be safe from any bombardment that would ensue.
"Mate! Haul this up there!"
I looked at the man below me, straining his arms to lift the sack of sand up to me. I smiled at him
despite for the glare that he was giving me.
"Sure. No problem," I quipped. Using my whole upper body strength, I reached out to him and lugged the
huge sack over my shoulder. Slowly, I ascended the mountain that we have made. I have to be careful,
otherwise me and the rest of the mound would come down in a landslide.
"You should not be here. What gave you the idea that you have the right to do this. No, let me rephrase
that. What gave you the idea that you are even allowed to do this?!"
I heard the hiss below me. Without turning, I smiled and gave my reply: "Josh, you are worrying too
much. I could handle myself well enough. Thank you for your concern." I paused to catch my breathe as I
placed the burdensome load on top of the pile. Looking down at him, I sighed and continued, "I shouldn't
have told you in the first place, Josh if I had known you'd be this difficult."
Josh raked a hand into his hair and muttered, "I would have spotted you a mile away." He held his hand
out to me for support as I descended down. Our task is complete for the day.
Facing him, I wiped the smudge smeared across his face. "You wouldn't have. Remember?"
He shoved my hand away, and harrumphed. "Remember what?"
"You denied that you actually know me." I pointed out, snatching the tail of his shirt when he tried to
skirt around me. He is not going to just leave until I have made him see the error of his actions.
He looked at me incredulously. "Well, that is just because you were acting quite, I don't know,
stupidly?" He tried scrambling away, but with my tenacious hold, there is no way he could escape.
"I was trying to determine if you would be able to identify me, my dear friend."
He scoffed. "By getting the bottom of your pants caught in a rig and attracting a crowd?"
I crossed my arms, trying not to be miffed at that. "I was asking for your help, but you completely
ignored me! And I did not do that on purpose!"
"Really? You weren't?"
