He jerked up with a gasp, hands scrabbling behind him to brace his upper body instinctively as slitted eyes opened wide… a trickle of sweat sliding down a red marked cheek as his chest rose and fell in jerky movements.

A sudden loud bark made him wince and Kiba turned to look at the giant white furred dog, resting his head at the bottom of the bed as he looked up at him with worry.

Kiba lifted an unsteady hand driving it into dishevelled brown hair that was falling over onto his face.

He pulled in a deep breath as his gaze dropped to his lap… and he felt his cheeks flush red beneath the marks already there as he saw erection tenting the blankets.

Normally he wouldn’t give a crap but… then again he wasn’t used to having those kinds of dreams about –

His eyes widened as he swung his head round to look at the alarm clock.

“Fuck.”

In one jerky movement he threw off the bed sheets and ignored Akamaru’s whine as they landed over his head.

He was late.

Tugging off the sweat dampened t-shirt he rushed to the bathroom, tripped over one of the many items that littered the bedroom floor and had to violently yank the material when it got caught around his head.

“Shit. Shino’s gonna kill me!”

*

“You’re late.”

Kiba glared down at his mostly hidden team mate from atop Akamaru, as Shino stood beneath the shade of a tree, his arms crossed and face hidden beneath layers of clothes and dark shades.

“Yeah, yeah –,” he lifted a hand to scratch at the back of his head as he felt the smallest bit of guilt, “sorry.” He bit out, not particularly liking having to apologize to Shino.

He tipped his head back and squinted slightly at the hot sun shining down on them. He sighed – it was okay, he’d just ditch his jacket as soon as they started training.

Akamaru shifted beneath him and he looked away from the sky back down to Shino who had already pushed away from the tree and was starting on his way down the trail.

“Let’s go, Hinata is waiting for us.”

Kiba nodded and clenched his fist around Akamaru’s fur, “Let’s go Akamaru.” The dog gave a small jump and then followed after Shino.

For a while silence ruled over them as they made their way down the trail leading to the Hyuga compound, Akamaru occasionally getting side tracked by a butterfly, which would make Shino stiffen and stand up a little straighter.

Kiba was in the middle of leading Akamaru back to Shino, as they approached the Hyuga gates, when Shino spoke up.

“Kiba.”

Kiba almost jumped at Shino’s quiet call, turning to give the bug wielder an incredulous look. Shino was starting a conversation?

Shino on the other hand carried on walking, facing forward with his hands inside his pockets as he walked beside Akamaru.

“Lately you have been distracted,” he continued, voice expressionless, “you have been this way since the celebration for Naruto being chosen as our Rokudaime.” Shino paused and turned to look up at Kiba as he urged Akamaru to stop as well – there was only a short distance from where they stood to the Hyuga gates.

“If something happened then you should feel free to discuss it with me and Hinata. This lack of communication and concentration can be damaging to the team.”

Slitted eyes widened a little as they looked down at the bug wielder and Kiba felt a small twinge of guilt. It was true, since he’d seen… well – anyway. It was true, he’d been distracted, and the dreams that he’d been having practically every night hadn’t helped it either. Never mind that he hadn’t seen that person since Naruto’s party.

He gave Shino a sheepish grin as his hand went automatically to rub at the hair held in check by his hitae-ate.

“Don’t worry about me Shino – I’m fine.”

Shino didn’t move, but remained looking up at Kiba, his hands in his pockets. Briefly, Kiba wondered how Shino could wear so many layers on such a hot day.

“Kiba – denial is not productive in team work,” the other nin pointed out in his usual stoic voice.

Kiba’s smile dropped instantly as did his hand, settling on Akamaru’s back, as he leaned forward slightly to glare down at Shino. He hated when the bug nin started with his lectures on team work.

He ignored the slight ticking he felt at his temple as he shot a feral look at the other man. “I said I’m fine,” he snarled.

Shino continued to watch him coolly for another second before turning his back on the riled up Inuzuka and continuing on his way towards the gates.

“Hmm – then see that you pay more attention in the future.”

The tick increased as the last words reached him.

Glaring at the other man, Kiba grumbled under his breath about annoying bug nin’s that thought they were the boss of everything, before following after him.

Catching up with Shino, the dog nin let him go through the tall gates, before allowing Akamaru to tread after him into the training grounds of the main branch of the Hyuga compound.

As soon as Akamaru stepped into the wide court, the sound of clashing metal and feet moving on dirt reached him and Kiba looked up, curious to see who was training… only to feel every bone in his body lock into place as he saw Neji moving in for an attack against Hiashi-sama.

His gaze snapped to Shino who had also paused to take in the two sparring men.

“I thought team Gai was on a mission,” he said, his tone accusing, even as his heart sped up.

Beneath him Akamaru shifted, tipping his large head back to give Kiba a questioning glance.

Shino looked away from the interesting display of strength to observe Kiba, slightly surprised at the tone of voice that Kiba had used.

“They were,” he agreed with a small nod of his head, “perhaps they finished early.”

Kiba opened his mouth to comment.

“Good Neji.”

He turned to watch as Hiashi straightened from his defensive stance, pale eyes trained on the younger man breathing hard in front of him.

“That’s enough for today,” the older Hyuga said, robes shifting slightly as he turned to walk out of the training grounds. “Your team will be waiting for you,” the man said over his shoulder.

“Hai,” the usually smooth voice sounded a little ragged and Kiba shifted his gaze just in time to see the unusual way the Hyuga was dressed.

The traditional clothes the Hyuga usually wore had been discarded in favour of the black slacks and a black gi that left a lot of pale skin on view. The long black hair was pulled back into a loosened ponytail, allowing black strands to escape, falling to sneak beneath the loose gi and sticking to the dampened skin beneath. The hitae-ate had been left off and replaced with white strips of bandages over his forehead.

Kiba stared, unaware that his mouth was agape as his eyes stayed locked on the still panting Hyuga, his hands were down by his sides, one still wrapped around a kunai as the Jonin panted.

Then as if sensing the stare, white eyes turned and focused unerringly on the dog nin.

“My name – I want to hear it Inuzuka.”

Slitted eyes opened to half mast to meet the pale ones of the body shifting above his – his mouth opened to tell the other he wasn’t going to scream like a girl, but all that left him was a groan as the pale body rammed into him.

A smirk was aimed down at him and one elegant, pale hand slid down the dark muscles to settle on a toned, tanned thigh, using it as leverage to drag him closer and sink deeper –

“Kiba.”

Kiba blinked at the sharp call and found that he was still staring at the Hyuga who was watching him in return – his breathing obviously having returned to normal, as the other man watched him almost dispassionately. There wasn’t even a touch of embarrassment on his face that hinted that he might find it uncomfortable being near Kiba, when Kiba himself could feel the way his own cheeks heated up.

Yeah well – I shouldn’t, I wasn’t the one caught doing stuff in the Uchiha’s bathroom, he told himself – but his gaze was still locked with the Hyuga’s.

“Kiba.”

This time he snapped out of it and because he felt flustered, he turned to Shino with a scowl.

“What?” he practically snarled.

Before Shino could answer, they saw Hinata appear, the shy girl giving a small smile as she saw her team mates waiting for her at the gates and immediately began making her way towards them… until she saw Neji.

Violet tinged eyes widened and she stopped, a happy glow emanating from her as she caught sight of her cousin.

Seeing his cousin, Neji gave a small nod of greeting before moving to join her, both of them starting to make their way towards Shino, Kiba, and Akamaru.

Sensing Kiba’s escalating discomfort, Akamaru shifted restlessly, making a low sound of displeasure as Kiba’s fist tightened on his fur.

“Ohayo Shino-kun,” Hinata greeted with a smile, “Kiba-kun.”

Shino gave a nod of acknowledgement.

“Hey Hinata,” Kiba said back, making himself smile down at her despite the discomfort of Neji standing so close.

“Neji-san,” Shino said with another tilt of his head.

Inwardly, Kiba wondered if Shino was human – the way he spoke and acted sometimes made him think otherwise.

Neji replied in kind and then…

There was silence as three pairs of eyes turned to Kiba. Two of them were expectant and the other blank.

Kiba looked up, his eyes darting from Shino to Hinata, who were obviously waiting for him to greet the older Hyuga.

He felt dread sink like a stone to the bottom of his stomach as he turned his head vaguely in Neji’s direction, his eyes trained on the floor and mumbled a ‘hey’.

“Hinata,” Shino spoke in his toneless voice, “we should leave.”

Hinata gave a small nod. “Hai,” she said softly and turned to Neji. “Ittekimasu Neji-nii-san.” She said with a soft smile and a slight bow.

Neji gave her a small barely-there smile and watched for a moment as she and Shino moved away.

“C’mon Akamaru,” Kiba urged, his voice lacking its usual loud enthusiasm. And as Akamaru shifted, preparing to turn away – Kiba looked up and locked eyes with eerie ivory ones.

For a moment they remained like that.

To Kiba it felt like those eyes were seeing right through him to all those dreams he’d been having.

“Kiba.”

He snapped out of it and blinked at the Hyuga who was still staring at him, feeling slightly confused.

And then Akamaru whined and Kiba glanced away.

“Yeah, yeah. Let’s go.”
